Honestly I think TS4 is the best basegame in the series.Obviously it doesn't have quite the modding support/expansions that the previous games have yet so I get why people say its a little 'empty', but I really believe that once there's more than just the one expansion and there's more modding capabilities it'll be the best in the series, period.Though the whole TS4 vs. TS3 thing is a bit silly since they are very, very different games- the 'better' one is purely personal opinion, I think. TS3 does a better job of catering to designers, but TS4 has stronger gameplay (aside from the loss of open world), and is a lot closer to TS2. First thing first: Whichever game you choose you probably will have fun. Or I hope you do, anyway.The other information in this thread is sound but one critical piece has been left out. The Sims 1/2/4 simulates a single lot (house/business/dorm/park whatever) at a time- the rest of the universe is frozen. The Sims 3 simulates the whole town at once.

While your Sim is at home painting a picture so she can buy a better bed, her neighbors may be having a party, the kid from down the street may be aging up to a teen, and a husband my be grieving over the loss of his wife to a flaming piece of space debris. Generations adds more activities and flavor to most ages (namely kids and teens), while seasons adds weather and, well, seasons.Pets and University Life ehances the life simulator in optional ways. Having pets and going to college may be something you want to do with some sims and not with others.Nightlife and Island Paradise pull the life simulator away from small towns/suburbia to a big(ish) city and a tropical island, respectively, with all the things those places entail (clubs, subways, and high rises for NL and boats, diving, and shell collecting for IP). IP doesn't work very well.Ambitions and Showtime add new ways for your Sim to work. They both really use the open world- sending your Sim all over town to do stuff. Ambitions has a bunch of things, from firefighters to private eyes to Ghost hunters, while showtime focuses on entertainers.World Adventures and Into the Future lets your sims explore different places. WA has three new lands to explore, complete with puzzle ridden tombs.

ITTF lets you visit three versions of a far future city, complete with robots and hover xard. It's pretty rad.And finally Supernatural adds werewolves and witches and fairies and stuff like that. It doesn't interest me at all, but many people like it.The stuff packs are mostly just junk, but High End Lot Stuff and Fast lane (Full Fart!)
